Blackjack: Origin

In the early 1900s, blackjack was introduced to American casinos, where it became a popular game among players and was often used to attract new customers. Over time, different variations of the game were developed, including the use of multiple decks and various betting strategies.

In the casinos around the world, Black Jack (also known as Bk or Blackjack) is the most played card game. Card games in general are ancient and can be traced back to ancient China and Egypt. In Europe, card games with 52 cards have existed since the 14th century. These had similar symbols to the Tarot and also already possessed different valences.

The modern Blackjack game rules of casinos derive from the French “Trente et Un”, where the 31-point mark was decisive. In the 17th century, you can find the first trace of today’s Blackjack game called “Vingt et Un”, where the 21-point mark is decisive.

Today, blackjack remains one of the most popular and widely played casino games in the world. It has evolved into a complex game of skill and strategy, with many different variations and rule sets available to players. Its long and storied history has helped to cement its place as a classic and enduring casino game.

Pros & Cons of Blackjack

Advantages✅

  • The basic blackjack game rules are easy to explain.
  • The rules of the game are common in every casino worldwide.
  • With a bit of strategy and luck, good winnings can be made by playing Blackjack.

Disadvantages❌

  • It takes some time and practice to see through all the possible card and point combinations and develop a game strategy.
  • If the croupier scores more than 21 points and so does a fellow player, this is not considered a draw, the fellow player also loses the bet in this case.
Term Definition
Blackjack A hand consisting of an ace and any 10-point card (10, J, Q, K). It is the strongest hand and beats all other hands.
Bust To go over 21, which results in an immediate loss.
Hit To take another card. Players can continue to hit until they choose to stand, reach 21 or bust.
Stand To stop taking cards and play the hand as is.
Double Down To double the original bet and receive one additional card before standing.
Split To separate a pair of cards with the same value into two hands and double the original bet. Each new hand receives a second card, and the player continues to play each hand separately.
Insurance A side bet that is offered when the dealer’s upcard is an ace. The player can place an additional bet, up to half of the original bet, to insure against the dealer having a blackjack. If the dealer does have blackjack, the insurance bet pays 2:1.
Surrender To give up half of the original bet and forfeit the hand, usually offered as an option if the player’s hand is weak and the dealer’s upcard is strong.
Push When both the player and dealer have the same value hand, resulting in a tie. No money is won or lost in a push.

Blackjack Table, Main Objective and Basic Rules

Blackjack Table

Blackjack is usually played at a special table called the blackjack table, which is semi-circular, and on its straight side sits the croupier or dealer (also banker, dealer). Up to seven players can sit at the round side of the table. However, Black Jack is not a team sport; each player plays alone against the bank.

Nevertheless, the other players at the table have some influence on the individual game, because it is about the cards already played and limiting the probability of which card is likely to come next.

Objective

The object of the game is to get closer to 21 points with two or more cards than the dealer or to get exactly 21 points. However, it must not be more than the value of 21, so it is especially important to know and remember the values of each card.

Basic Rules

At the blackjack table, the croupier or dealer (also banker, dealer) and up to seven players sit opposite each other. On the table there is a painted tray for the bet and some lines that determine what position the players’ cards may occupy.

The game is played with six stacks of French playing cards, each of which has 52 hands, for a total of 312 cards. A typical Blackjack card has the bridge format and carries extra large index characters with the English designations for the individual images: K (king) for king, Q (queen) for queen and J (jack) for jack.

The players themselves are not allowed to touch these cards, because the blackjack dealer always plays and collects the cards. The players’ cards are usually placed on top of each other in a slightly staggered manner, so that the value of each card can still be easily seen. Learn the rules of the online blackjack casino game to get started.

Just like the vocabulary words, it is important to know the rules of online blackjack so that you don’t mess up. Indeed, it would be a shame to place a bet without knowing how to play the game. So if you want to play blackjack at home, let’s quickly go over the main rules.

  1. First of all, you should know that the “heads” are worth 10 points each (Jack, Queen, King). Cards from 2 to 10 are worth their own value, and the Ace is worth either 1 or 11.
  2. You play alongside any other players, and all play against the dealer.
  3. The dealer begins to deal one card each (including himself), then a second (his second card remains hidden).
  4. Then each player decides whether or not to receive a third card, depending on the hand they have. Then a fourth, then a fifth, etc.
  5. When the players do not wish to receive any more cards, the dealer turns over his second card and adds more if necessary.
  6. The game ends with a comparison of the dealer’s and the players’ hands, the goal being to get as close to 21 as possible (or even to have a total of 21 points) without ever exceeding that value.

Blackjack on Mobile Devices

Today, a large portion of casino players play their favorite games from their mobile devices. Few players still play from a computer. It is therefore up to sweeps casinos to adapt and offer a version of their site optimized for mobiles.

It is very rare these days to find gambling sites that haven’t done what it takes to make sure that their players can enjoy themselves comfortably on their mobiles thanks to HTML5 technology.

In order to play online casino blackjack from your smartphone or tablet, nothing could be easier, just open your mobile browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome…) and go to an online casino website. You will see that the interface is perfectly adapted to your small screen!

Sweepstakes Blackjack vs Live Blackjack vs Video Blackjack

Sweepstakes Blackjack, Live Blackjack, and Video Blackjack are three different variants of the popular casino game.

Sweepstakes Blackjack

This is a variation of blackjack that can be played online in most states. Players purchase virtual coins such as Gold Coins and usually receive Sweepstakes Coins as free reward. Gold Coins are used for pure entertainment and players cannot redeem real prizes when playing Blackjack, however, when playing with Sweeps Coins, users can win real money prizes. Sweepstakes blackjack typically follows the same basic rules as traditional blackjack.

Live Dealer Blackjack

This is a version of blackjack that is played in real-time, with a live dealer and other players at the table. Live blackjack can be played at land-based casinos or online. It offers an immersive experience and allows players to interact with the dealer and other players. In most live blackjack games, a blackjack pays off at 3 to 2, giving the player a better payout than video blackjack.

Video Blackjack

This is a digital version of blackjack that is played on a video screen, typically at a land-based casino. Video blackjack can also be played online. Unlike live blackjack, video blackjack usually only pays off at even money, giving the house an additional edge of 2.29%.
